Ambitious Georgian rugby team prepare for important matches in November

TBILISI, November 5, 2024 - The Georgian national rugby team has participated in the World Cup six times (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), won the Rugby Europe International Championships 17 times - the last time: March 17, 2024. The Rugby Europe International Championships tournament does not include teams from the Six Nations Championship (England, Ireland, France, Scotland, Wales and Italy), but this does not diminish the victory of Georgia, who is trying to win the right to join the SNC (Six Nations Championship).
Since January 2024, the head coach of the Georgian national team has been the famous English specialist Richard Cockerill.
On July 13, 2024, the Georgian national team defeated Japan (25:23) in a third-round test-match in Sendai, and on July 20, it met Australia in Sydney, and despite the loss (29-40), it earned the approval of international specialists.
Currently, the Georgian national team is preparing for three test matches. "Against the the All Blacks XV in Montpellier on November 10, against Italy in Genoa on November 17, and against the Tonga national team on November 24 in Tbilisi.
Regarding these matches, Cockerill spoke to the website of the Georgian Rugby Union:
“The standard of play against the "All Blacks XV" is enviable for any Test match. During this period, the New Zealand main team is playing in Europe, and the team that will face us on November 10 (All Blacks XV) will be composed mostly of players who will not be in the main team of New Zealand, so it will be a difficult game."
Cockerill noted that in 2022 in Batumi, Georgia defeated Italy (28-19) and thus made a big statement that Georgia potentially deserves to enter the 6 Nations. "Even now winning the game against Italy is very important. As for Tonga, this will be the best opportunity to show the world what Georgian rugby is," said 54-year-old Cockerill.
