TBILISI, November 25, 2024 – Grigol Gventsadze has been elected as the new president of the Georgian Sports Writers Association, succeeding Mikheil Abaishvili, who led the organization with distinction for the past eight years, driving significant progress alongside his team.
ELECTORAL MEETING During the conference that determined the new leadership, Gventsadze stood as the sole candidate for the presidency. His vision for the future of the Association, shared well ahead of the election, earned him overwhelming support, with an unprecedented 101 votes in his favour.
Gventsadze is a highly respected figure in Georgian journalism. He began his career as a leading journalist at TV Imedi, later serving as the PR Manager for Dinamo Tbilisi, Georgia’s most iconic football team. Currently, he is a broadcaster for 1TV and a distinguished publicist. Recently, he published a book capturing the magical journey of the Georgian national football team and its supporters during the last European Championships.
In his acceptance speech, Gventsadze expressed gratitude and optimism:
"First of all, I would like to thank my dear colleagues for their unanimous and unprecedented support. My deep respect also goes to the team that has been leading the way for the last eight years. As a part of this team, I will ensure the continuation of its course, focused on expanding, refining, and developing our organization.

With passion, experience, and love for sports journalism, we will strive to make it safer, more prestigious, and more respected. Once again, my deepest respect to all of you, dear colleagues." Bidzina Baratashvili and Tengiz Pachkoria will continue as vice-presidents, joined by Mikheil Abaishvili, who transitions from his role as president. Zurab Talakvadze, Secretary-General of the Association for the past eight years, will also remain in his position.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mikheil Abaishvili shared his thoughts:
"Leading the Georgian Sports Writers Association was a great honour and responsibility. I am pleased that my colleagues have positively assessed my and my team's efforts over the past four years. Today, we have elected a new president, Grigol Gventsadze, who is a truly worthy candidate and a good friend. Together with his team, which I am proud to remain part of, I am confident the association will continue to develop and progress."
The continuity in leadership underscores the association’s commitment to building on its strong foundation while embracing new opportunities under Gventsadze’s stewardship.
