LAUSANNE, February 3, 2025 – AIPS Athletes of the Year 2024, pole vaulter Armand “Mondo” Duplantis and gymnast Simone Biles adorn the cover of the latest AIPS magazine, which is now online and available for download. The IV/24 issue also features an exclusive interview with Duplantis in which he discussed his training routine, the very difficult process of travelling with his poles, and his plans of flying over 6.40m in the future.
AN UNCHANGED MISSION In his editorial, AIPS President Gianni Merlo highlighted the need for sports journalists to continue to work together to defend the independence of the profession and advocate for clean sport, peace and a better society. AIPS, established on 2 July 1924, will be 101 years old in 2025, but while sports journalism has evolved over the years, the mission remains the same.
AIPS BEST ATHLETES 2024 American gymnast Simone Biles and Swedish pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis, two of the brightest stars from last year’s Paris Olympics, were crowned the AIPS Athletes of the Year 2024, as voted by 518 journalists from 111 countries. In an extensive interview with AIPS, Duplantis, who finished second in the 2022 and 2023 editions of the AIPS poll, expressed his joy at winning the award for the first time.
IOC PRESIDENT HAILS AIPS100 PROJECT The IOC President, Thomas Bach, met with the young reporters who participated in the AIPS Centennial project, “100 Olympic Stories told by 100 Young Reporters from 100 Nations”, during an online roundtable on 5 November 2024. He congratulated the AIPS President Gianni Merlo and the young colleagues for bringing “this really brilliant idea” to fruition and helping to “spread the Olympic values across the globe”. During a Q&A session moderated by the IOC Spokesperson Mark Adams, the IOC President fielded questions from the young journalists on a range of topics around the Olympic Movement.
SAUDI GAMES 2024 AIPS, in collaboration with the Saudi Sports Media Federation and the Saudi Ministry of Sports, organised a Young Reporters Programme during the Saudi Games 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
