What Kirsty Coventry as IOC president means for canoeing

Lisa Carrington of New Zealand

LAUSANNE, March 25, 2025 - Kirsty Coventry becoming the first woman to be elected as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is a boost for gender equality and will be a source of inspiration globally.
We in canoeing are extremely proud of the fact that for many years now we have also been striving to increase the number of female athletes, coaches and officials. Our policy is proving successful, right up to the highest level of our sport. Reflecting our dedication to providing equal opportunities, we had the same number of girls and boys in the Olympic canoe programme for Paris.
All over the world, canoe and kayak events, once dominated by men, are now drawing more and more women. Such role models as Lisa Carrington of New Zealand and sisters Jessica and Noemi Fox of Australia, with their many gold medals have gained considerable media coverage and promoted the sport’s popularity. Growing interest has led to greater and more widespread participation on the part of girls and women.
It is gratifying to note that equality, diversity and inclusion are not just catchphrases here but make paddlesports more attractive for athletes, spectators and journalists alike.
