Argentina, Brazil and Colombia qualify for first edition of FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup

BOGOTÁ, April 2, 2025 - The women's futsal teams of Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia now have tickets to compete in the first World Cup of the modality, which will be held in the Philippines from November 21 to December 7, 2025. All three nations earned their spots after their participation in the Copa América, where Brazil, the host nation, was crowned champion, Argentina finished second, and Colombia third.
Qualifying
Brazil joined the select group of 16 nations when they thrashed Colombia 6-0 in the semifinals. Although there was still one match left to know if they were going to be the champions, with that victory they already secured their place in the top women's futsal competition. In the final, with a 3-0 victory, they defeated the Argentines to win the Copa América title for the eighth time and reaffirm their status as the most successful team in the continental tournament. The team was coached by Wilson Nobrega.
Argentina finished first in Poll B in the group stage thanks to victories over Peru, Chile, and Uruguay, and a draw against Colombia. In the semifinals, they faced Paraguay, a match they started losing but came over with goals from Silvina Nava, Mailén Romero, and Ana Ontiveros. With this win, they not only secured a place in the final, but also a ticket to the Philippines 2025. In the final, Nicolás Noriega's team lost 0-3 to Brazil.
The third-place of the CONMEBOL Copa América, won by Colombia after defeating Paraguay 4-1, gave to the “Cafeteras” a ticket too, they will also join the qualified teams to write the history in the women's futsal. In the semifinal match for a place on the podium, Nicole Mancilla and Angely Camargo unleashed their full potential, each scoring a brace to seal the match, securing the bronze medal and adding Colombia's name on the list of qualifiers for Philippines 2025. Colombia's head coach is Roberto Bruno.
The World Cup
The FIFA Women's Futsal World Cup will bring together national teams from its six confederations plus the host nation, as follows:
Asia: 3 places
Africa: 2 places
CONCACAF: 2 places
CONMEBOL: 3 places
Oceania: 1 place
UEFA: 4 places
To date, the qualified nations are: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, the Philippines, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, and Portugal.
The African confederation will hold its qualifying event from April 22 to 30, CONCACAF from April 28 to May 4, while the Asian confederation will hold its event from May 7 to 18.
The Venue
The cities of Pasig and Victorias have been selected to host this global event, although other venues could be named in the coming months. In Pasig, the venue will be the PhilSports Arena, with a capacity of 10,000 seats, while the Victorias City Coliseum has a capacity of 8,000. These two venues are separated by approximately 800 km.
A bit of history
Although this is the first edition organized by FIFA, it is worth mentioning that in the past, the Women's Futsal Players' Association (AJFSF) called on this organization to hold its own global competition. Thus, in 2010, the Women's Futsal World Championship (not to be confused with the FIFA World Cup) was held. It had only six editions, with eight teams participating in each, with Brazil as the champion of all. Portugal, Spain, and Russia were runners-up and third-place finishers, while Costa Rica also achieved a third place in 2014, the year in which it also hosted the tournament.
2021 would arrive, and with it, another request from the players to hold their World Cup with equal rights to men. This time, the request was heard by FIFA, which would soon announce the holding of this event. Finally, on October 4, 2023, it was announced that the first edition would be held in 2025, with the participation of 16 nations.
With this, FIFA now has five global women's events: the Women's World Cup, the U-17 World Cup, the U-20 World Cup, the Beach World Cup, and the Club World Cup.
